Southside Speedway kicks off 57th season this Saturday

MIDLOTHIAN - Southside Speedway, the “Toughest Short Track in the South!" opens for the 2016 race season on Friday, April 1. This season will be the track’s fifty-seventh year of operation. Front gate opens to the public at 6:00 p.m. Practice and qualifying starts at 5:20 p.m. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.

This season the Late Model division continues to grow at Southside Speedway with about thirty cars registered and nine new rookies making up a field that will be amazing to watch every race. Of the nine rookies, driver #5 Michelle Willingham, former UCAR Division Champion, will take the field for the first time as a Late Model driver, along with #99 Daniel Thomas, also a former UCAR and Grand Stock driver at Southside Speedway. Other rookie standouts include fifteen year old Grayson Cullather, former UCAR driver, and fifteen year old Cole Walker. This season the Late Models are increasing the number of laps run from 30 laps to 40 laps each race.

The Grand Stock division has grown to about twenty-five registered cars and eight rookies this season. Always one of the most entertaining races, this division promises even more excitement with more cars on the track! This season the Grand Stocks are increasing the number of laps from 25 laps to 30 laps each race.

Southside Speedway is a 1/3 mile, paved oval track located on Genito Road in Midlothian, Virginia. The speedway was established in 1959 by J.M. Wilkinson and is currently run by his daughter, Sue W. Clements, and granddaughter, Jennifer Mullis. The speedway features six divisions including Late Models, Modifieds, Grand Stocks, UCARS, Legends and Bandoleros.
