Single vehicle accident claims life of Ivor man

By Terry Harris

In what Surry County Sheriff Carlos Turner described as “the worst accident scene I have ever experienced,” 29-year-old Malcom Rashard Johnson, of the 36300 block of Broadwater Road in Ivor, was killed last Tuesday.

According to Virginia State Police, who investigated the scene, shortly before 1:58 p.m. on Nov. 3, Christina R. Mramor was driving a 2008 Mazda Tribute down Route 10 east of route 680 in Surry County when she lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway and into a cutover.

The vehicle then struck a tree stump in the cutover, VSP reported, causing it to flip and roll over. Johnson, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene shortly thereafter.

The report further revealed that Mramor and 43-year-old Demarcus A. Gatling, who was riding in the back seat, were transported to Southside Regional Memorial Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the report from VSP, possible charges are pending, and the accident is still under investigation.
