Meet Terry Harris, Writer, “Queenie Cooks”

Terry Harris

Terry Harris, the newest reporter for the Sussex Surry Dispatch, may be a newcomer to Sussex and Surry Counties, but not to the sensibilities and lifestyles of the region.

“I grew up on a peanut and cotton farm just a couple of miles over the border in Northampton County, North Carolina,” Harris said, “and my Mother, three of my four siblings, and a whole bunch of wonderful nieces and nephews still live right there. So coming to work in this area just feels like coming home.”

In the years since Harris graduated from Appalachian State University, she has lived all over the country – in Colorado, Chicago, Dallas, and on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Along with years of work with various community organizations, she has developed and run an international gourmet peanut catalog, established and run a successful helicopter brokerage, and been active in chamber of commerce activities and the promotion of tourism wherever she lived. But she says that some things always remained constant for her.

“I dearly love theatre, writing, cooking, family, and this part of the country – not in that order,” she shared.

Harris laughed as she explained that she has always loved to cook – beginning at the age of seven when she was growing up with four brothers and sisters on that Northampton County farm.

“I guess it was just natural that I would eventually combine my love of writing and my love of food into writing about food,” she said, laughingly referring to highly popular food columns that she has written for two previous newspapers before coming to the Dispatch. “I have literally thousands of recipes that I have collected or developed, and at least a dozen cookbooks inside my head, if I ever slow down enough to get them finalized and published. But honestly, what I enjoy writing the most always comes back to one thing – sharing the truth, whether it’s striving to accurately deliver hard news, or the truth in the hearts of people who share their own, special stories. I can’t tell you how excited I am at the prospect of hearing and sharing the stories of and about people and events here.

Look for Queenie Cooks weekly for recipes that are generally simple to prepare, require relatively few (and easy to find) ingredients, and usually budget friendly as well. We all have to eat. Let’s have some FUN with it!
