Meet Terry Harris, Writer, “Queenie Cooks”

Terry Harris

Terry Harris has always loved to cook. And having grown up almost on top of the VA/NC line, she feels a special affinity for the sensibilities and lifestyles of the entire region.

Since graduating ASU, she has lived in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Chicago, Dallas, Edenton, and Southern Shores.  And starting and running both an international gourmet food catalog and a helicopter brokerage has afforded opportunities to travel the world and sample – and love – all kinds of cuisines.  

“But wherever I’ve been, some things have always remained constant,” Harris says. “I dearly love family, writing, cooking, theater, and this part of the country!  I actually grew up on a Northampton County peanut and cotton farm, and though I’ve lived all over the country, finally being back here  again near my Mother, my siblings, and a whole bunch of wonderful nieces and nephews – this is home.  This is where Mama started teaching me to cook when I was about seven years old.  And Queenie?  Well, that’s what my Daddy always called me, from the time when I was just a little girl. I guess it was just natural that eventually I would combine my love of writing and my love of food into writing about food.” 

She began collecting and developing recipes long before writing two previous popular food columns, and admits, “I probably have thousands of recipes – certainly many hundreds – and at least a dozen cookbooks inside my head, if I ever slow down enough to get them organized. But honestly, what I enjoy the most always comes back to one thing. I love sharing the truth when I’m writing – striving to accurately deliver hard news, the truth in the hearts of people who share their own, special stories – and, as Queenie, sharing recipes that make it easier for someone to make their holidays or life events or just dinnertime memorable… special… delicious… and fun!  Getting to write about the adventure of just going wild in the kitchen? I love it! Knowing that just maybe I’m making someone’s life a tiny bit easier by offering ways to make taste treats ranging from homemade biscuits to exotic (but so simple to make) sugared cranberries and walnuts for the holidays?  Well, pardon the pun, but that’s just the icing on the cake!”


Look for Queenie Cooks every week online and in the Sussex Surry Dispatch and other local papers  for food-related recipes, stories, information, and fun.  You never know what Queenie may be cooking up, but you can always count on at least one great recipe to try at home, generally for something you can prepare quickly, easily, and with just a  few, common ingredients.
