Jennie Winifred Maifeld Berryman, devoted wife, mother grandmother and great -grandmother passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Southside Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was 89.
Mrs. Berryman was born on March 24, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Frederick William Maifeld, Sr. and Jean Marie Calendar Maifeld. She was predeceased by her husband, Winston Greenwood Berryman, Sr.; her son, Winston Greenwood Berryman, Jr.; brothers, Frederick William Maifeld, Jr., and Donald Lee Maifeld; and her sisters, Jean Marie Maifeld, Gladys Maifeld Jones, and Amelia Maifeld Barrett, and her beloved nephew Frederick William “Fritz” Maifeld III.
Mrs. Berryman was born and raised in Waverly, Virginia and graduated from Waverly High School, where she was a star on the girl’s basketball team. She was a lifelong member of Waverly Congregational Christian Church, where she faithfully served in numerous capacities, becoming ordained as a deacon on February 11, 2007, and was a member of the Waverly Women’s Club. In her working career, which began as a young girl, Mrs. Berryman worked at Dean’s Five & Dime and at Southside Production Credit, both located in Waverly. She then worked for several years in the Treasurer’s Office in Surry County. Mrs. Berryman was employed by Gray Lumber Company of Waverly, Virginia for 34 years, retiring as its Sales Manager in 1990.
Mrs. Berryman loved playing basketball, gardening, preparing meals for her family and caring for her children and grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Rita Berryman Hughes (Felix), and Wendy Maifeld Berryman; daughter-in-law, Ellen Francis Berryman; grandchildren, Monty Greenwood Berryman (Alyssa), Adam Greenwood Berryman (Sheri), Ashley Hughes Conrad (Ryan), Leigh Barham Wood, William Greenwood Berryman (Madison) Jennifer Hughes (Scott Flournoy), Laura Habr (Kal), James Wood (Christy), Madison Taylor Johnson, and Amelia Nichole Johnson; great-grandchildren, Elijah Greenwood Berryman, Layla Eavie Berryman, Marshall Greenwood Berryman, Elizabeth Lee Berryman, Addison Grace Berryman, and Lincoln Greenwood Edward Berryman; sisters-in-law, Gayle Berryman Brown and Betty B. Berryman and numerous nieces and nephews. She wanted her niece, Sharon Maifeld Dunn to know how much she appreciated all of her special thoughtfulness throughout the years. Her nephew, Donald Lee Maifeld, Jr. was also a faithful correspondent and his kindness was much appreciated.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Waverly Congregational Christian Church with Rev. Joy Heaton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Surry. The family would like to thank the wonderful care givers at Harborway Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach Virginia, and the staff at the Waverly Health Care Center for the much kindness extended to her and her family during her time with them.
