Hilton Hanson Newbold, Sr., 73, of Waverly died March 17, 2016 at Retreat Hospital in Richmond following a period of declining health.
Born April 16, 1942 he was the son of the late Herbert Hanson Newbold and Dorothy Vassar Newbold.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jeanette Goodrich Newbold; brothers, James Hunter Newbold and David Lewis Newbold and a son-inlaw, John T. Thacker.
Like his father, Hilton was an avid fisherman and a great lover of Country and Gospel music, having sung with local bands and on many occasions over the years.
His signature and best loved hymn was always “How Great Thou Art.”
Hilton proudly served his country in the United States Army in Germany. He was a member of Burton’s Grove Christian Church.
Hilton is survived by a son, Hilton Hanson Newbold, Jr.; a daughter, Terri Newbold Thacker; a sister, Barbara Newbold Harrison; a sister-in-law, Patricia Newbold; a special friend and caregiver, Bill Warren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Sunday, March 20, 2016 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel from 6 to 8:00 pm.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 pm Monday, March 21, 2016 at Burton’s Grove Christian Church. Burial with military honors followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Hilton’s memory to be made to P.O. Box 727 Wakefield, VA 23888 to assist the family with the funeral expenses.
