Charles Winston Britt

Charles Winston Britt, Sr., 78, of Wakefield passed away Friday, March 11, 2016. Born in Southampton County, he was the son of the late Charles Albert and Edith Catherine Raby Britt.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jean Britt Atkins and his brothers, Albert Britt and Johnny Britt.

Winston retired from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years of service. He was the owner and operator of Britt’s Service Center in Wakefield for over 36 years which was known as the home of the famous “Britt Dog.” Winston loved the Wakefield community and served it in many different capacities. He was the mayor of Wakefield for 20 years, having served on Wakefield Town Council prior to becoming mayor. He was very involved with Virginia Aviation, working to improve and upgrade Wakefield Municipal Airport. Winston was an active member of the Wakefield Ruritans where he was named Ruritan of the Year in 2006. He was a member of the Wakefield Rotary, a member of the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department, a board member of Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church and a member of the “Rams Club” in Chapel Hill, NC.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 48 years, Judy L. Britt; children, Charles “Chuck” Winston Britt, Jr., Cathie W. Britt, Charmin Britt Lee and her husband, Will and Carmin Britt McSwain and her husband, Bo; grandchildren, Danielle Whitney, Keegan Lee, Kohen Lee and Britt McSwain as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Wakefield United Methodist Church, 205 West Church Street Wakefield, VA 23888. The family received friends immediately following the funeral service in the church fellowship hall. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department, 155 Fleetwood Ave. Wakefield, VA 23888, or to Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O.
