TOWN OF WAVERLY – Waverly resident and well-known local New York Life agent Jesse K. Hellyer, Jr., CLU, received 8 industry-related awards last week.  On Saturday night, Feb. 2, Hellyer was recognized as a Million Dollar Round Table Life and Qualifying Member, Life Super Star, Gold Elite Annuity Champion, Agency Builder, and member of Club 100, as well as being named Runner- up for Annuity Commission, Lifetime Income Annuity, and Agent of the Year at the New York Life Richmond General Office Annual Awards Dinner in Midlothian, Va.

The 1985 Graduate of Randolph-Macon College, who was inducted into the R-MC Athletic Hall of Fame as a stand-out on the basketball team, started with NYL in 1993 after being a teacher and coach at Tidewater Academy 1985-1993. During his nearly 20 years with New York Life, he has served in numerous capacities, has been a Top 10 agent in the Richmond Office for 15 years, and was 2016 Agent of the Year.

During remarks for and about the event, Hellyer said, “I am fortunate to be associated with New York Life. Most of the time the first thing people say is, ‘That’s a life insurance company – which is correct. …What most people don’t realize is that besides life insurance, NYL is the undisputed leader of income annuities, a leader in variable annuities, a top five company for long term care insurance and recently moved into the top 26 investment company… So many products are backed by the company I rest easy nightly knowing I won’t have to apologize for NYL now and, most importantly, in the future.”

“Even though I am a rural detached agent,” he added, “I have the big city knowledge to provide proper planning to work with my clients to protect, grow and distribute assets, using all products available.”

Hellyer said that he feels fortunate to have such great support from the local New York Life office as well as their  consultants and service center staff, because, “…I am my own business, but with these people working with/for me, I am not alone in my business.”

In his private life, Hellyer is a Lay Leader at Wakefield Untied Methodist Church, serves on the board of directors for the Franklin Southampton Area Chamber of Commerce, and is Vice-President of the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce.

Hellyer said that he would have been unable to accomplish the things that he has without the “steadfast support and encouragement” from his wife, Kari, a lifelong resident of Sussex County, graduate of Virginia Wesleyan, and teacher at Tidewater Academy for 33 years. They have two sons, Quinton who is also with NYL and lives in Greenville N.C. with his wife, Kari, and Martin, a 1st LT. with the US Army who recently returned from service in Korea and is stationed at Ft. Stewart in Savannah GA.

Hellyer revealed plans to open an additional office in the Emporia/South Hill area this coming year, and said that he looks forward to continuing to grow his business at his base in Waverly and his Franklin office.

“My career has been so rewarding,” he added, “and I am grateful to God for giving me the purpose and drive to reach out to friends and clients to help them plan for their future.”
