SUSSEX – Fifteen members of the Waverly High School Class of 1969 recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their Graduation at The Back Porch & Grille in Franklin, and, according to class member Jerry Edwards, “It was Great!”
“The afternoon and evening event allowed us to reminisce as well as to reconnect with people we hadn’t seen in a few years – and some we hadn’t seen in almost fifty years,” Edwards said. “We appreciated the spouses that attended, because they offered support to the group also. It’s interesting. Spouses don’t know a lot of the folks, but we’re a very welcoming class. Form the beginning, the Waverly class – when it merged with the Wakefield class – were very welcoming and have maintained that throughout the 50 – no 56 years since it started in seventh grade – of our being together.”
“We had a social hour – well, a couple of hours,” he continued, “then dinner, then memories from various class members. President Beverly Pittman Hartz gave a speech and we honored Betsey Barrett Kello for doing a lot of the coordinating.”
Edwards added that special guests in attendance were Mrs. Carolyn Sterling Beale and Mrs. Bill Story. There also was a commemorative display for classmates Bob Daniel, Teddie Faison, Gary Neblett, Barry Pittman, Arthur Lee Presson, Larry Rogers, and Teddi Janis Smith.
Members of the Class of 1969 who attended the Reunion were Joy Gay Bowman, Lloyd Bradshaw, Kathy Ashby Brockwell, George Collins, Jerry Edwards, Garland Gray II, Diane Parsons Gwaltney, Beverly Pittman Hartz, Betsey Barrett Kello, Marilyn Lewis Long, Kathy O’Berry Hurt, Cheryl Brown Pettway, Carol Ashby Schlichtherle, Fred Seward, and Barbara Wheeler Whitehead.
