WAVERLY – The results are in, and the Second Annual Town of Waverly 5K race not only brought in funds needed for town improvements, but also raised awareness of new events and plans to involve more local citizens and promote pride in the community, according to Mayor Angela McPhaul.
“After last year’s race, the proceeds were used to plant trees and shrubs at the playground and tennis courts,” McPhaul said. “This year the more than $4,000 dollars raised at the 5K will be used to pay for community events.”
“The Waverly Communications Department, headed up by Pam Jones, has sponsored three movie nights during 2019,” she explained, “and we have had to borrow the screen and projector. We are excited to be able to purchase our own screen and projector as well as a tent with the Town of Waverly logo.”
“We do a lot of events where we need a tent,” McPhaul continued. “Just in 2019 the Town of Waverly participated in back-to-school events, four separate Trunk or Treats, National Night Out, the Cancer Run and many other activities. We’re looking forward to adding even more as we continue to come up with new ways to engage and include the entire community in special events to promote community involvement.”
The race began on the third Saturday in October with Waverly resident Wayne Francis releasing two white pigeons. Participants circled the 3.2 mile loop beginning at the Allen W. Gibson Memorial Park and followed streets throughout the town including Coppahaunk, Bank, Beaverdam, Railroad and Chestnut, and the winners turned in some very impressive times.
Winners, in 1,2,3 order included Musa Gwanzura, Roanoke Rapids, NC (16:24), Michael Scudder, Norfolk, VA (21:06), and James Overton, Waverly, VA (21:12) for men. Winners for women – also in 1,2,3, order – were Patti Presson, Wakefield, VA (25:46), Cynthia Barbour, Disputanta, VA (26:28), and Kimberly Overton, Waverly, VA (27:09).
The 2020 Town of Waverly 5K is already on the calendar for Sept. 19, 2020.
