WAKEFIELD – A Navy serviceman was left seriously injured after the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a pick-up truck in the Town of Wakefield last Saturday morning.
In an interview, Sussex County Sheriff Ernest Giles said the crash occurred just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday when 28-year-old Juan Rodriguez Sanabia was traveling westbound on U.S. Route 460 on his motorcycle when he was struck by an eastbound-traveling Chevrolet pick-up truck that was making its way to Route 31.
Sanabia survived the crash and was rushed to a local hospital via ambulance after weather in the area prevented a helicopter-based transport. As a result of his injures, the motorcycle driver lost a foot and part of his leg, according to authorities.
The driver of the pick-up truck, identified as 83-year-old Major Len Smith, was charged with failure to yield.
