SUSSEX – A West Virginia man died in a crash along U.S. Route 460 Wednesday afternoon.

According to Virginia State Police representatives, just before 3:30 p.m., the department was alerted to a vehicle that had gone off the road along General Mahone Highway near Cabin Point Road just a few miles outside of the Town of Waverly.

Through their preliminary investigation, VSP Sgt. Michelle Anaya said a 2019 Toyota SUV driven by 73-year-old Carl Bernard Thorne lost control, running off the road and striking a tree. Thorne, of Hampshire, West Virginia, died at the scene.

A female passenger was taken to VCU Medical Center in Richmond with serious injuries. Her condition is unknown as of Thursday morning.

According to Anaya, Thorne was wearing his seatbelt and alcohol was not a contributing factor in the single-vehicle crash.

The incident closed a portion of U.S. Route 460’s eastbound travel lanes as troopers investigated the crash, with VDOT working with state police to establish a detour along Cabin Point Road. The roadway’s lanes reopened a few hours later.
