WAVERLY – Two 19 year old men are in custody in Sussex County following a shooting that left one area man with bullet wounds in the face, throat, chest, and lower left stomach area on Sunday night.
According to Sussex County Sheriff Ernest Giles, at around 430 p.m. on July 21, a 911 call came in that a man had been shot multiple times near the intersection of Rt 40
and Beaverdam Road. Officers from both the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department and the Waverly Police Department immediately raced to the scene.
Giles indicated that gunshots were exchanged between multiple parties, and officers retained the victim of the shooting until EMS came, administering help on the scene.
At the same time, he said, “A Waverly Police officer observed the vehicle leaving the area of the shots fired with a broken window, stopped them, and the suspects were detained within five to fifteen minutes of the call to the 911 center.”
Giles said that preliminary investigation indicated that the incident grew out of a sale gone wrong, and that the two men in custody, Camden Potter and Gavin Smith, both of Virginia Beach, allegedly had come down to purchase a Playstation 4 from the victim. The two were questioned and served with warrants shortly after 8 p.m., less that four hours after the incident occurred.
Giles attributed the rapid capture of the suspects to quick work by both the Waverly PD and Sussex County Deputies.
“We don’t play,” he said.
As of press time, the investigation was still pending and the victim’s name had not been released, but Giles said that due to the quick work of EMS and law enforcement officers, the victim had been treated at the hospital and released.
