WAVERLY – On October 20, the starting gun will go off to begin the First Annual Town of Waverly 5K race and you’re invited! Waverly Mayor Angela McPhaul said that she is really excited about this community improvement event that promises to be a lot of fun – and raise funds to make the town park more user-friendly year-round.
“About 10 years ago Virginia Tech students from the Community Design Assistance Program provided a Master Plan of the park and tennis courts for the Town of Waverly,” McPhaul explained. “The plan called for a playground which was completed several years ago and named the Allen W. Gibson Community Park after the officer, who was killed on duty in 1998. But the plan has never been completed.”
As McPhaul further explained, a big part of the completion of the park includes providing shade in the park.
“Because there are no trees or shade, it’s just too hot to enjoy the equipment in the summer months,” she said. “So the proceeds from the race will help with the beginning stages of completing the Master Plan – which calls for shade over the playground equipment as well as restrooms, a water fountain, a walking trail, picnic areas and landscaping.”
“We’re excited to have $5,000 in local sponsorships for the event,” McPhaul added, “And of course we’ll welcome any donations for the park – which can be deducted as a charitable donation!”
“We want the citizens of Waverly to be able to use the park throughout the year,” McPhaul continued. “So we’re asking everybody to stop by Waverly Town Hall between now and the 20th to register, and then come on out and have some fun with us! ”
Registration for the One Mile and 5K Races can be done at Waverly Town Hall, 119 Bank Street, Monday through Friday between 8 and 5 p.m. Entry fees are $15 for anyone under the age of 18 or over the age of 55, and $25 for ages 19-54. Race check-in on the day of the event will be at the park between 8 and 8:30 p.m. For further information or to make a donation to the park fund call Waverly Town Hall at 804-834-2330.
