SUSSEX – Three people, including a three-year-old child, lost their lives in a deadly crash along Interstate 95 in Sussex County Thursday morning.
According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya, A 2009 Dodge Caravan was traveling southbound on I-95 just south of U.S. Route 301 when the driver ran off the road and struck a tree head-on.
Authorities said the vehicle was occupied by two adult females and five children.
48-year-old Olga Mondragon Briones, 32-year-old Elizabeth Sanchez, and three-year-old Nelson Flores, all of North Carolina, died upon impact.
One 12-year-old boy was flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond with life-threatening injuries.
The other three children, ages 3, 8, and 12, were also taken to VCU Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
The Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist in the ongoing investigation.
