SURRY – A Surry County woman has lost her life in a weekend crash in Isle of Wight County, Virginia State Police reported.

In a statement, authorities confirmed 66-year-old Jackie Doby Cassidy of Surry was one of two people who died in a Sunday evening crash along Route 10 near Wrenns Mill Road in Isle of Wight County.

According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Sunday evening and, through their preliminary investigation, it was revealed that Lewarren Edwin Burrell, 54, of Smithfield was traveling eastbound along Route 10 when he “veered into the westbound lanes and into the path of a 2015 Toyota Prius,” driven by Cassidy, “causing a head on collision.”

Both Burrell and Cassidy were pronounced dead at the scene.

While authorities continue their investigation, Anaya said it remains “unclear” if alcohol was a contributing factor in Sunday’s crash.
