SURRY – On the night of Jan. 15, just after 9 p.m. , two unknown subjects entered and attempted to rob the Quick Stop convenience store at the corner of Rolfe Highway and Colonial Trail East, according to Surry County Sheriff Carlos Turner.

Turner described the first suspect as male, 5.6” – 5’8, skinny build, wearing a full face camouflage mask, black “PUMA” hoodie, blue jeans, gloves, and possibly armed.  The second was described as male, approximately 20 years old, 5’8” – 5’10”,  skinny build, wearing a full face black mask, black hoodie, black pants, gloves and armed with a handgun.

The suspect brandishing a handgun demanded cash from the clerk.  When the clerk refused to comply, a shot was fired downward and then both suspects fled on foot down Oakwood Drive toward Lebanon Road. No injuries occurred as a result of the shot being fired.

The Virginia State Police Tracking K-9 was called to the scene, but after tracking several hundred yards down the road, Turner said, “the track yielded negative findings.”

“We haven’t had anything like this in the county in quite some time,” Turner reported.  “I think this was an isolated robbery.  We have leads, and I feel confident that we will make arrests this week.”

“The clerk was very fortunate that nothing happened to them,” he added.  “And please tell everyone don’t put your life in danger. If you encounter a situation like this, comply to the best of your ability,  and take proper steps to assure your safety and that of the people around you.”

Anyone with information related to the robbery attempt is urged to call Surry County Sheriff’s Office at 757-294-5264.
