SURRY – The theme of the 2019 Career Exploration Fair at Surry Elementary School on May 3 was “Anyone Can Be Anything,” and school counselor Tracey Gilchrist, organizer of this year’s event, said, “That is truly my belief. Representatives from various career paths donated their time and talents to the 3rd and 4th graders who   had the opportunity to visit with each community partner and discuss their careers.”

Gilchrest said that the students asked questions about why guests chose a particular career and what they do every day at work.  She added that they also shared why it is important to do their best in school and why soft skills like manners, working in teams, and being respectful are critical characteristics.

She added Surry Elementary School is very appreciative of the handouts, treats for each student, and time from their busy schedule that the participants provided.  Businesses and organizations that participated included the following: Prince George Electric Cooperative, Surry Department of Social Services, Christopher Newport University, Surry County Department of Youth and Family Resources, Surry County Department of Parks and Recreation, Windsor Mill, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Surry County Sheriff’s Department, Surry Department of Animal Control, Christopher Jordan Group, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Dendron Fire Department, District 19 Counseling Services, Bacon’s Castle, and Chippokes Plantation State Park.
