SURRY – Ray Phelps, Emergency Services Coordinator for Surry County, was awarded the Outstanding New Emergency Management Professionals Award through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management last week at the 2018 VDEM Conference in Hot Springs.
Phelps, who is also a Graduate of the Emergency Management Professional Program Basic Academy Cohort 8, said that he is proud to work directly with three volunteer fire departments and a combination Rescue Squad to provide Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
Among Phelps’s responsibilities are handling all natural and manmade disasters – such as hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, etc. – that could hit Surry county as well as preparing for assistance and training for preparedness related to the nuclear power plant.
