Surry Co. declares local emergency in response to state coronavirus cases

SURRY – Surry County Department of Emergency Management is diligently working with multiple County agencies as well as the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the Governor’s Office in ensuring that our citizens are well informed of the precautions needed to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus/COVID-19.

Surry County has had no report of or testing of individuals in regards to the Coronavirus/COVID-19.

Surry County could be faced with condition which could have adverse effects to our citizens; therefore, a decision was made to declare a local emergency. The declaration was declared to allow Surry County the ability to seek reimbursement of expenses associated with the emergency should a set threshold be met.

Governor Ralph Northam declared a State of Emergency on March 12, 2020 and ordered all Virginia K-12 schools closed for a minimum of two weeks starting Monday March 16, 2020. The actions Surry County has taken and will be taking are a direct reflection of the actions that are being taken throughout our region.
