SURRY – In the early morning hours of Jan. 22, Surry County Sheriff Carlos Turner and deputies arrested two suspects in connection with the Jan. 15 attempted robbery of the Qwick Stop at the corner of Rolfe Highway and Colonial Trail East, according to Turner.
Turner related that Ronald Ray Estes III, 18, and Kenneth Robertson, Jr., 20, both of Spring Grove, were arrested without incident due to the way that the department handled the incident.
“My investigator obtained warrants and my deputies and I simultaneously executed the warrants at two different apartments early in the morning,” Turner explained.
Estes has been charged with robbery, wearing a mask to conceal identity and petty larceny in connection with the robbery attempt. Robertson was charged with robbery, wearing a mask to conceal identity, maliciously shooting in an occupied building, willfully discharging a firearm in a public place, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Both are being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail.
During the robbery attempt, a handgun was brandished and then fired when the clerk refused to hand over cash, Turner stated.
The Sheriff added that fortunately no one was injured during the robbery attempt, but “because of the nature of this incident, we wanted to make sure that we got these people off the street and in custody as soon as possible.”
