SUSSEX – On May 19, Sussex County Sheriff Ernest Giles will team up with The Petersburg Sheriff’s Office, Petersburg Police, Hopewell Sheriff’s Office, Petersburg TRIAD, and Crater Area Agency on Aging to offer local residents an opportunity to share with area seniors in need. Personnel with Cruisers from these departments will be at the Petersburg Walmart from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., so that local citizens can drop off common items generally taken for granted, but often unobtainable by seniors on a fixed income.
“It’s a great program speared by [Petersburg] Sheriff [Vanessa] Crawford,” explained Giles. “All the cruisers will be parked outside the Walmart. So, for example, if you want your donation to go to Sussex, you can just go over and put it in the Sussex cruiser. Some of us from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department will be there with our cruiser, and we will bring back anything collected to the Sussex residents. Your donation can make a huge difference in the health and comfort of someone less fortunate, and all you have to do is purchase any of the items and drop them off with us in front of the store on your way out.”
Items needed include the following:
- Body Wash
- Body Lotion
- Light Bulbs
- Toilet Paper
- Paper Towels
- Laundry Detergent
- Fabric Softener (Liquid or Sheets)
- Air Freshener (Plug-in or Spray)
- Trash Bags – Foil/Plastic Wrap
- Paper Plates/Napkins
- Plastic Utensils
- Non-Perishable Snacks
- Coffee (Regular & Instant)
- Tea Bags
- Drinking Water
- Hand Sanitizer
“It’s important that we’re not forgetting our past as we’re looking toward our future,” Giles added. “Any way we can assist our elderly, we’re going to try to provide for them. They’re the pillars of the community, and through the years, they have done so much for us. Now these small donations, in turn, can help them in a big way.”
The Walmart Store is located at 3500 South Crater Road along U.S. Route 301 in the City of Petersburg, just off Interstate 95 and a short drive from U.S. Route 460.
