SUSSEX – At the September meeting of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors, Shilton Butts got a big surprise. As she quietly sat in her accustomed corner typing notes for the meeting, Butts, who has spent years in the helping to keep things running smoothly in the background as Assistant to the County Administrator, was visibly shocked when she was brought into the limelight. As Chairman Susan Seward called her forward to be recognized, Butts’ facial expression went from calm, quiet professionalism to astonishment to absolute joy as Seward presented her with a huge bouquet of flowers.
Describing Shilton as “the one who keeps things going in that blue box,” Seward said, “ Shilton does so much. She’s the person who is always preparing certificates, awards, resolutions, taking pictures as people receive them, and she spends a lot of time and effort making them beautiful. I found out that last month – when we did not have a meeting – it was her birthday. So it just seemed fitting that the person who is always doing such nice things for others be recognized herself.”

“She’s been doing this for a long, long time,” Seward continued, “and she’s always so humble, so quiet, in the background, never asking for anything for herself. I don’t know that she’s ever not answered the phone on the first ring on anything that I’ve called her for, and there’s never a moment when she can’t provide whatever it is that one of us is looking for. So I want to make sure we Honor Shilton. So we have flowers for you Shilton!”
Following loud, prolonged applause, Seward laughed and added, “See, Shilton, YOU get to be in a picture now! Thank you again, Shilton, for all that you do for us.”
