SUSSEX – Two Wakefield women died Monday in a crash along a commonly traveled intersection in Sussex County near Interstate 95.

In a statement Tuesday morning, Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police confirmed Verna Elizabeth Hill, 66, and Linda Ann Ellis, 61, both of Wakefield, died in a crash that occurred at the off-ramp at the intersection of Route 40 and I-95 just before noon Monday.

“A 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier was attempting to exit onto Route 40 from Interstate 95, southbound, when the driver, Ms. Verna Elizabeth Hill, ran the stop sign at the bottom of the ramp and was struck by a 2017 Volvo dump truck that was traveling westbound on Route 40,” Anaya detailed regarding state police’s preliminary investigation into the crash.

Hill died at the scene while Ellis was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg where she also died from her injuries.

The driver of the dump truck received non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash, authorities said.

According to Anaya, “Speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.”
