WAVERLY – A weekend argument between a father and son resulted in one person being rushed to the hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Waverly Police and the county sheriff’s office, just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, authorities were called to the 900 block of West Main Street in the town where they found 31-year-old Steven Askew suffering from several gunshot wounds he received during a struggle with his father, 50-year-old Steven Batts, also of Waverly.

Local law enforcement said the pair had just left a party and were engaged in a disagreement, which they brought back to the residence.  Sussex County Sheriff Ernest Giles said that the shots occurred during a struggle with a 22-caliber rifle as Askew’s mother was trying to twist the gun down.  Askew was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg where he was listed in fair condition as of this report.

Batts was charged with malicious wounding, brandishing a firearm, and three counts of child endangerment. According to authorities, alcohol was a factor in the Sunday shooting, which remains under investigation.
