SURRY – A very spry Mr. Lawrence Jones, 96, was recognized by the Surry County Board of Supervisors at their Feb. 7 for his many years of good work in the community.
The board unanimously approved Resolution 2019-03 which read as follows: “WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence Jones, a resident of Surry County, Virginia, in the Carsley District, has obtained the age of ninety-six years on January 11, 2019; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jones has served honorably in the United States Navy for approximately two years, enlisting in 1944; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was employed for twenty-three years by Gwaltney Packing Company in Smithfield, Virginia as a mechanic; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jones has devoted himself to Christian charity work, with activities too numerous to mention; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jones established the Apostolic Church of Christ in Dendron, Virginia in 1963, and still serves as a pastor there fifty-six years later; and WHEREAS, The Board of Supervisors of Surry County wishes to recognize this milestone in Mr. Jones’ life and the many contributions that he has made to help make Surry County a better place for all of its citizens through his active participation in the affairs of the County; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Surry County Board of Supervisors hereby extends its heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Lawrence Jones for his endeavors aimed at improving the quality of life for the citizens of the County.”

In a humorous and moving presentation, Supervisor Kenneth R. Holmes read the resolution aloud and then shared fond memories from childhood onward of Mr. Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence graciously accepted the resolution, smiling and commenting that he gives credit to God for his being able to do the things that he has, and that he intends to continue to do the same.
